Harbour Island

Rock House Hotel - Harbour Island

Service at Rock House is second-to-none. This is due to the ever-watchful eye of Don Purdy who seems to effortlessly keep a thousand balls in the air all at once. This guy never stops -- I'm not kidding.

The pool area is quite lovely. There are large, comfortable, cushy lounge chairs along the far side of the pool, where hotel guests can while away a sunny day. The pool is heated to optimum temperature so it's not like going through shock therapy when you want to cool off. The bar is located right where you'd want it which makes it handy when you are Jones-ing for a frozen tropical drink -- more about those later.

Fortunately, you don't need to be a guest at Rock House in order to indulge in one of their fantastic meals.

Lunch is served in the patio area providing a most tranquil and enjoyable setting. I don't know if fish tacos are considered a house lunch "specialty," but if not, they should be. Two white fish filets are nicely seasoned, grilled to perfection, and then wrapped in soft shells. Nice, light, wonderful.

You must also be sure to try their tuna melt which isn't anything at all like the tuna melt you may remember as a child. This dish is a delicious tuna filet cooked to medium rare, served on fresh island bread. The tuna remains the star of the dish as there is just enough melted cheese on top so as not to take away from the wonderful flavor of the fish.

And of course, I had to have a Pina Colada. The best I have ever had anywhere, bar none... no pun intended. Rock House serves their Pina Coladas with a nice rum floater on top which you don't see everywhere -- a delicious bonus.

While we're on the subject of cocktails, a Rock House signature drink is their frozen version of the Goombay Smash, and yes, it tastes as good as it looks in the photo. Don't miss this one -- or two!

You can enjoy dinner in several different areas of the restaurant. There is service on a lovely terrace facing Harbour Island's famous Bay Street as well as in the veranda area around the pool where lunch is served. There are a number of small cabanas on the far side of the pool which are the epitome of private romantic dining.
