Who Should I Rent A Golf Cart From?
Golf carts are the primary choice of transportation on Harbour Island Bahamas. The unofficial estimate for number of golf carts for rent on the island is over 800. Another unofficial source stated there were "over 3000 registered carts." There are many sizes to choose from depending on your transportation needs. Many rental places will offer the "7th day free" when renting on a weekly basis. If you are on a budget and you have to pay for the gas, fill the tank up at the government boat dock before returning the rental.
Certain details are worth paying attention to before reserving and accepting a cart - does it have a windshield, is it a newer rather than older cart, does it have working lights, horn, emergency brake, etc. Don't be shy about asking to take a cart for a short spin before accepting it. Ask for a better cart or maybe look for another vendor if you are not happy with what you are renting.
It is best to make advance reservations for golf cart rentals during Harbour Island's busy seasons. It is also a good idea to ask your rental contact or hotel who they recommend and whether they can make reservations for you. Most of the hotels can include the golf cart charges in the bill at the end of your stay so you don't have to pay up front. The hotels have an interest in having you enjoy your stay so they know how to take care of your needs.
Some golf carts are new and modern and others simply run. Here are rental details you can ask about:
- What kind of payments do you take?
- Do you require a security deposit?
- Besides the rental fee, what other fees apply?
- What are restrictions are there to using the golf cart i.e. age restrictions, location restrictions, license requirements, etc.?
- What are the legal and financial liabilities for renting the golf car?
- How old is the golf cart?
- Is the gasoline included with the rental?
- Is delivery and pickup provided?
- What will you do if the golf cart breaks down and how fast can you get me back on the road? Do you have a cell phone number I can call?
Important Note: Whether you are informed or not, ALL legal and financial liabilities for golf cart rentals on Harbour Island is borne by the renter including all cost or repairs, loss, damage, and injuries to persons, properties regardless of fault or conditions. Insurance for these liabilities is not available for renting golf carts on Harbour Island.
Be on the lookout for the occasional pothole and the speed bumps at the south and north end of the island. You don't want the person riding in back to get hurt. Above all, be sure to always drive on the left side of the road and take your keys with you when you leave the cart.
Tip: A golf cart rental vehicle will have a license plate that begins with the letters “SD”. If your rental cart does not have this license plate, then you are likely renting someone's personal golf cart. On a humorous note, some say the “SD” stands for “Student Driver”.
